How to write an effective grant proposal
Writing a grant proposal almost like writing an essay, it has an introduction, body and conclusion. Almost all proposals follow the same guidelines, and you can best be sure that your funding agency will be looking for this type of essay style. Below are some guidelines to get you started on an effective proposal to your free money grant.

1. Getting Started
The first thing to do is to read the grant application provided by your funding agency. You can then:

  • Highlight all questions that need to be answered so as not to miss any vital information

  • Brainstorm! Formulate ideas and decide on the most solid arguments.

  • Examples. Use persuasive examples that will be the most persuasive in proving your case.

2. Opening Statement
Give a brief introductory paragraph summarizing who you are, what your project is, your specific aims, and how much you’re asking for. This allows the funding agency to get an idea on your case and then read for details.

3. The Body
This is the heart of your proposal. While all agencies want essentially the same information, they may provide direct questions to be answered, or leave it up to you for a personal narrative.

  • Start by writing out ideas generated in your brainstorming session. See which ones directly correlate to the agency’s guidelines. Do not worry about polishing your work; that can be done at the end of your proposal. Just concentrate on the rough draft.

  • Do not ramble or over talk. Clear, concise writing is most effective and the agency will appreciate you getting to the point.

  • Once you have finished your rough draft, revise and revise again. Make sure all of your points relate to your main proposal. If you have information in the proposal that does not answer a question or add importance; take it out!

  • Have someone go over and proof read your work. The best way to catch mistakes and redundancies is to have a fresh pair of eyes to assess your writing.

4. Essentials To Include In Your Proposal
In the proposal there are some important details to include.

  • Budget- Be realistic about the money you need and specific about how it will be put to use. The more details you provide, the more likely your grant application will be approved.

  • Don’t round numbers. Understanding the money needed down to the dollar shows attention to detail, responsibility and knowledge in money management.

  • Reference letters and financial documents that give legitimacy to your claims will help. Having proof that what you are saying is accurate will greatly help your case.

5. Mailing The Proposal In
When the proposal is finished, be sure to send it with anticipation. Each organization has deadlines, do not be late, very few agencies will have sympathy for you or your cause after that.

  • Approximately after a week of mailing the application, call the agency to ensure that all of your documents have arrived and that your application is complete.
Lastly, be patient. While some agencies have a quick review process, others can potentially take several months.
